You know, every single day I get messages from people saying to me, “I wanna get started“, “I wanna start making some money with Kindle Direct Publishing“, but they might not have so much money saved up, so I totally get it! That’s why I’m going over this topic today and together we’re gonna go over the different methods, like I said, for you to get started for little to no money. I’ll also be sharing some tools and tricks and tips for you to get started right now.

Step #1 – Registering your Amazon KDP account

All right, so one of the very first things you should have in order to get started selling books on Amazon is a KDP account. KDP stands for Kindle Direct Publishing. And this will allow you to upload a file otherwise known as a book manuscript. And basically what it will also provide for you is the ability to customize the title for your book, input some keywords, put in a description, select some categories, select your price, etc. Then when you hit publish, you’ll be able to publish and within 72 hours (roughly) KDP will review your book. If everything is great, what will happen is that you’ll be able to sell across all the different worldwide marketplaces, available on Amazon. So everywhere, anybody can buy on Amazon, and you’ll be able to sell your books there!

The beauty of it is that you don’t need to hold any kind of inventory, and you don’t have to have any kind of storage or shipping or whatnot. Amazon or Kind Publishing takes care of all that. Lastly, yes, creating an Amazon Kind direct publishing account is absolutely free. You don’t pay anything to create an account and there are no subscriptions or any hidden fees, there’s none of that. The only thing you do pay for is only when you generate a sale. So only when your book sells do they take a small fair share for basically distributing and selling your book. They, there’s also going to be, in the case of physical books such as paperbacks and hardcover books the printing and shipping fee which is deducted from the overall price that you’re selling your book. But again, the point of this post is not to go over every single detail, but to give you a general overview of how you can get started for free! So go ahead and click the signup button on the KDP website to create your own Kindle direct publishing account, and for you to start publishing books to sell worldwide around Amazon.

Step #2 – Book Topic / Product Research

So, now that we have an Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing account, we actually need a product to sell. So the next step in this process is to actually find and create a product!

A lot of people think that what they need to do is create a bestseller book, like, like write some sort of Prince Harry book on Amazon’s Books Bestseller list that is currently ranked number two in worldwide sales, but that’s not what we’re trying to. Since this post specifically addresses creating a book for no money, what I recommend you stick to are low-content or no-content books? These are types of books that like agendas, planners, and drawing books. Something that doesn’t have too much content in it, and that is very easy to create. Now, unlike what a lot of people out there are going to recommend you do, and that is just to create an agenda that basically says “2023” or a “planner 2023” or you know, “Boss Women”. Unfortunately, in the year 2023, that is a bit saturated, and what I recommend you do is use some tools to help you find some book topics that could be extremely lucrative for you to produce. I’ll show you exactly how we find them using this free software that anyone can use.

So I recommend a piece of software called Helium 10. It’s a free chrome extension (obviously, if you like this tool so much and you wanna use some of the advanced features, you’re gonna have to pay for it). But of course, for the sake of this training, I’m recommending you everything that you can get started with right now to make money for free using Amazon KDP’s platform. Now one specific tool on the software, called “Black Box”, allows you to quickly scan Amazon and find profitable book topics. You can select the category of books, the number of reviews for competition, the bestseller rank of competitors, and keywords to find a book that has proven successful but doesn’t have too much competition. By using Black Box, you can easily find the needle in the haystack and determine which book will bring in the most revenue with the least amount of competition.

All right, so without further ado, after doing some research using this tool I came across a pretty topic for a coloring book: “Pretty Dresses, coloring book“. It’s making almost $1,900/month with only eight reviews on it, and it was published in November 2022, so not too long ago. Within this topic, there is another topic that I believe a lot of people are buying. So the people that I think this book is geared towards are maybe women, maybe young girls, and what girl wouldn’t want a coloring book related to wedding dresses, right? For a lot of women, this is kind of like their dream thing. So, I found a few other books that are doing very well. That said, I now know for a fact I wanna produce a low-content coloring book that has to do something around dresses with different illustrations!

Step #3 – How to Create a Coloring Book From Scratch Using Free Tools

I’m gonna give you a few different options here. One way that you could produce the coloring book, is without spending too much money at all, and the other options are 100% using free tools!

If you’re looking to create a coloring book but don’t have the time or artistic skills to do it yourself, hiring a low-cost expert through platforms like Fiverr or Upwork is a great option. These websites offer a variety of talented professionals who can help bring your vision to life. Simply search for “image drawing” or “coloring book design” and you’ll find a range of options to choose from. You can even specify your desired theme, such as “pretty dresses,” to find an artist who can create designs that fit your specific needs. Remember to negotiate the price and clearly communicate your expectations before beginning a project to ensure a successful collaboration. So, these websites can be a great resource for creating a beautiful and professional coloring book on a budget.

Another option is to use commercial free images that are available on the internet by searching for them on Google. There is also a new AI platform called “DALL·E 2” by OpenAI that can generate designs based on keywords, but it is important to check their terms of service to ensure that the designs are commercially usable.

Another option is to use an online tool that converts images into sketches, as long as the original image is commercial-free. Finally, you can also create your own designs by drawing or sketching them yourself.

To Summarize

This is how a simple “pretty dress coloring book” is making roughly $1,900/month passively each and every month for this publisher. It doesn’t have to be too hard. Now, obviously, I skipped over a lot of little details here and there, but the point of this post was to give you an overarching view of how to do this, how to create a book, for $0, or maybe just a little bit of money…

Obviously, I’ve been doing this for a while and I’ve made quite a lot of money using Kindle Direct Publishing, so if you’d like to learn more, I have free training you can register to attend for free going over this entire business model, so be sure to check that out as I’ll be going over an entire presentation that’s dedicated to helping you start to make money using Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), especially in the year 2023!
